Curating a Tech Friendly Environment

The times are always changing and it seems like technology has something new to offer every week. For business owners, this can be an incredible catalyst for growth — tech solutions can streamline many business operations for peak efficiency. This frees up the team’s collective attention to uncover fresh ideas and pursue new endeavors.

However, every opportunity comes with obstacles and implementing tech into a company can be a challenge for some. Be prepared for some team members to feel intimidated, or overwhelmed to a technological shift — let’s look at some ways to ease your team into it and ensure a seamless transition.

Prepare your team first

The last thing you want to do is show up on a Monday morning and drop a new digital platform on your team and expect them to run with it. Prior to launching your chosen tools, have an open discussion with your team to hear their thoughts and concerns. Better yet, bring team members into the decision making process to understand what works and doesn’t work for them. After all, they are likely to be more familiar with the day-to-day challenges that need to be addressed.

Create your training plan

Once you know which tech tools you will be implementing, it’s time to create a plan for teaching your team how to use it. Recognize that each employee operates distinctly and will have different reactions to new tech solutions. Early adopters may be familiar with the tech already, whereas technophobes may be resistant to new interfaces. Consider whether your team will get the most value out of a formal on-site class, virtual workshops, or one-on-one trainings. It may even be a combination of these strategies based on your team, so be prepared to work with everyone at their own pace.

Provide ongoing support

Bringing new tech to your company isn’t a one-and-done situation; you need to consistently follow up with your team to ensure that you are seeing the improvements you expected. Check in with employees individually to understand how their daily tasks have changed since they started using the new tool and work with them on any obstacles that have arisen. On the same note, keep a track of metrics to measure quantitative progress, whether that’s an increase in inquiries, booked events, or website traffic. Making business changes always requires an adjustment period, especially when it requires learning new skills and interfaces. Be patient and keep your team’s morale at top of mind; even the best tool can’t be a successful solution if your employees aren’t onboard. Take it slow and remain open to feedback; it may even take a few tries to find the right tech solution for your company, but it’s well worth it in the long run.
